North Corridor Metrorail Extension

The North Corridor extension would add roughly 10 miles of elevated heavy rail to the Metrorail system, branching north from the existing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Station (Gladeview) along NW 27th Avenue through unincorporated Miami-Dade County and Opa-locka to the Broward County line. Nine new elevated stations are proposed, including stops serving Miami Gardens near Hard Rock Stadium and Opa-locka Executive Airport.

The corridor concept dates to the 1990s and was originally studied as bus rapid transit before evolving into a rail proposal under the county’s SMART Plan. It is currently in a Transit-Oriented Development master-planning phase, ahead of formal environmental review.

2025-10 — Cost estimate rises to $4.7B amid community input process

Miami-Dade officials continued TOD master-planning workshops along the corridor as the projected cost climbed to $4.7 billion, up from an earlier $2.2 billion estimate, raising concerns about federal funding competitiveness.

2024 — Cost growth flagged as risk to federal funding

Florida Politics reported the project’s cost had already ballooned to $4.2 billion, a level officials said could jeopardize the corridor’s competitiveness for federal Capital Investment Grant funding.
