LA Metro Purple Line Extension Section 3

Under Construction

2.6-mile underground extension from Century City to Westwood, adding two stations.

Alignment

Section 3 of the Purple Line Extension runs 2.6 miles from the Section 2 terminus at Century City/Constellation Station westward beneath Constellation Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard to two new stations: Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital. The Westwood/VA Hospital station is located on the grounds of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.

Both stations are deep underground, with Westwood/UCLA at approximately 100 feet below grade. The alignment was challenged by the need to avoid the UCLA campus structures and existing utilities along Wilshire.

Updates

2025-11 — Station fitout and systems installation ongoing

LA Metro reported that both station caverns are structurally complete, with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installation underway. Platform screen doors and escalator pits are being formed at Westwood/UCLA.

2024-08 — All tunneling complete

The final tunnel boring machine broke through at the Westwood/VA Hospital station box, completing the 5.3-mile combined tunnel drive for Section 3. The TBM named “Angeli” completed the drive without incident.

2023-10 — Section 2 opens to passengers

The preceding Purple Line Extension Section 2 opened to revenue service between Wilshire/Rodeo and Century City/Constellation, giving riders a preview of the full Westside alignment.
