The TRAX Orange Line is a proposed new light rail line that would split from the existing TRAX system near University South Campus/400 West, run through the University of Utah’s Research Park, and continue through downtown Salt Lake City (with new stops at West Temple, Pioneer Park, and 400 West/300 South) before sharing trackage with the Red and Green Lines out to Salt Lake City International Airport. UTA’s preferred alternative, “Alternative 3,” adds 2.8 miles of new track and 8 new stations and was selected as the lowest-cost option studied, roughly $60 million cheaper than the alternatives.
UTA has set a goal of having the line operating in time for the 2034 Winter Olympics, which would require construction to begin as early as 2029.
