Alignment

Puerto Rico’s Autoridad de Transporte Integrado (ATI) has been awarded a $10 million FTA grant to study extending Tren Urbano beyond its current northern terminus at Sagrado Corazón station. The alternatives analysis will evaluate a route toward northwest San Juan and Old San Juan, alongside a separate branch option toward Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. The study will determine which transit mode — bus rapid transit, light rail, or heavy rail — best fits the corridor before any specific alignment is finalized.

2026-07 — $10 million federal grant awarded for feasibility study

ATI Executive Director Josué Menéndez Agosto announced the FTA grant on July 13, 2026, noting Puerto Rico ranked third among roughly 1,200 national applicants for the program — the first time the territory achieved that ranking for this subsidy. A federal meeting on the use of funds was scheduled for July 23, 2026.
