TCC T Line Extension (Tacoma Link)

The TCC T Line Extension (also called the Hilltop–Tacoma Community College Extension) would extend Tacoma’s T Line streetcar-style light rail 3.5 miles northwest from its current Hilltop terminus to Tacoma Community College, adding six new stations, including a stop near St. Joseph Hospital. The extension would grow the total T Line to 8.4 miles and 18 stations. Unlike Central Link-style Link light rail, the T Line operates more like a streetcar, with shorter at-grade segments, no full grade separation, and a free-fare zone.

Sound Transit is advancing the project through an “Enterprise Initiative” review aimed at closing an affordability gap — most recently estimated at around $20 million — before construction can proceed. The extension is a separate project from the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, even though both ultimately connect near Tacoma Dome Station.

Sound Transit continued working to close the extension’s roughly $20 million affordability gap, with delivery targeted for 2039 and a 2041 contingency if the gap isn’t closed.

2023 — Current T Line terminus opens at Hilltop

The T Line’s existing Hilltop terminus, from which this extension would begin, opened in 2023.
