The Central Subway North Beach Extension would extend the T Third Line north from its current Chinatown–Rose Pak Station terminus into North Beach, taking advantage of subway tunnel that was already bored past Chinatown toward Columbus Avenue and Union Street during the original Central Subway project. A relaunched 2026 study is comparing a minimal one-station extension to North Beach against a longer, multi-station option extending as far as Fisherman’s Wharf.
The study is in an early outreach phase, running from mid-2026 to mid-2028, with a cost estimate for the extension listed as one of its deliverables. SFMTA faces a reported $307 million structural budget deficit that could affect the study’s progress.
