Proposed ~12.5-mile extension of the Green Line light rail from downtown Sacramento through North Natomas to Sacramento International Airport, crossing the American River on a new bridge; SacRT is also weighing an interim bus rapid transit phase on the same corridor.

SacRT has proposed extending the Green Line roughly 12.5 miles north from downtown Sacramento through North Natomas to Sacramento International Airport, crossing the American River on a new bridge with elevated structures for much of the route. Estimated at around $2 billion, the extension currently has no committed local funding source, and SacRT is weighing a phased approach that would start with bus rapid transit on the same corridor ahead of eventual light rail construction.

2025-06 — Advocacy group outlines project status and funding gap

Sacramento Transit Advocates and Riders summarized the extension’s early planning status, noting the project cannot proceed to construction without a secured local funding match. (Green Line service has separately been suspended since June 2025 for construction of an infill station at 7th & Railyards — unrelated to the airport extension itself.)
